DYNAMO OPEN AIR FESTIVAL: Future Uncertain
January 4, 2002Holland's famed Dynamo Open Air Festival is once again in danger of being cancelled, possibly permanently, according to an update posted at Britain's Live4Metal. After the organization of the festival was taken over by the biggest Dutch promoter, Mojo Concerts, a couple of years back, a new site was announced in 2001 that would host the event for five years. Those plans were quickly squashed, however, once the foot-and-mouth disease broke out, causing the festival to be cancelled for the first time since its inception in 1986. Late last year, reports had indicated that a new site had been secured 20 minutes from Eindhoven (the festival's original location),and on November 19th, the standard six-week objection was submitted, which was to be the last hurdle before the festival was officially approved. Unfortunately, the local mayor then came out and said that only one event would be allowed in the area and the much smaller Bospop Festival had already been agreed to. In the end, the mayor refused to allow the festival to go on, despite protests from local traders in the town square who wanted it to go ahead. At the moment, it looks very unlikely that anything will change with respect to the mayor's stance on the whole issue, and all indications are that the festival will in fact fail to come off again this year, putting in jeopardy its prospects of ever being able to re-establish itself as one of Europe's premier metal gatherings.
